Story Time Fun Time -3.5 Stars-
This is gonna be a short one, since all of the story is on Soundcloud. I’m going to be real, I don’t have much to say about this one because its a true story. There is no elaborate chain of inspiration or references. Much of the editing was my attempt to imitate Ira Glass’s show production. The sound composition I had in mind was very simple: just tell the story and add environmental sounds when appropriate.
This is a story I have told people many times, but the biggest challenge I had was condensing into 5 minutes. I tried to hit only the important beats while not leaving out any critical info.
All done with Audacity and Freesounds, EXCEPT for the drums that play around 2 minutes into the story. I lifted those from a track I put together earlier this year.
1: Record your story into Audacity.
2: Edit out any Freudian slips or excessive pauses.
3: Load up your additional sound effects/music onto 1 audio track. For me this meant I only had 2 stereo tracks, as I would only have 1 additional effect going at any given moment.
4: Use the Fade In and Fade Out effects on the ends of your sound clips so that they are too abrasive and sudden.
5: Adjust the volume of the individual sound effects using the Amplify tool. This is easier than having each sound effect on an individual track and then changing those volume dials.
